For the first time, a coffee table book will honour Los Angeles as a nonprofit-friendly city, guiding readers through the people and moments that have shaped its civil society, as well as the places where organizations and communities meet, connect, celebrate, convene and collaborate.

As we marked the 10th anniversary of World NGO Day, the idea for Nonprofit City was born in the heart of West Hollywood, California, inspired by its vibrant civil society community.

Nonprofit City

Volume One is dedicated to Los Angeles County and the cities within it, beginning with West Hollywood. It is available in two forms, a curated digital coffee table book, open to all online, and a special edition, published as a numbered limited-edition print for collectors, partners and libraries.

Volume One celebrates Los Angeles through its civil society, from the movements that shaped it to the people and places that carry it forward today. Told through exclusive interviews and stories, original photography and archives, it features the nonprofit-friendly places of its cities, the stories of its partners and the nonprofits they support, and is powered by local brands, leaders and nonprofits.

A volume to keep, to share and to return to.

World NGO Day began in Europe and is now recognized in more than 140 countries. Nonprofit City was born in West Hollywood, so Volume One begins where the story started, in a county that is home to one of the world’s largest nonprofit sectors.

As the world turns its attention to Los Angeles in 2028, Volume One puts its nonprofits in front of an international audience. It honours the organizations that serve residents every day, the people behind them and the places that make room for them, and it carries the international day of NGOs far beyond California.

We welcome West Hollywood to recognize the Day

We would be honoured if West Hollywood considered proclaiming or recognizing 27 February 2027 or 2028, World NGO Day, as an international day to celebrate the city’s nonprofits and to welcome new organizations. It would be the first city in the United States to do so.

West Hollywood, California
