Somy Ali Calls for Greater Awareness and Support on World NGO Day
Somy Ali’s Message Echoes the Mission of World NGO Day
World NGO Day, celebrated every year on February 27, honors the life-changing work of nonprofit organizations worldwide. This year, activist and former actress Somy Ali offered a powerful reflection on both the challenges and impact of her NGO, No More Tears (NMT)—a message that resonates deeply with the purpose of this global day of recognition.
In an interview published by Outlook India, Somy Ali explained the ongoing struggle NGOs face in raising funds because of public stigma surrounding issues like domestic violence and human trafficking. As she stated:
“It’s a constant battle to get people to donate due to the stigmas attached… many people prefer to turn a blind eye.”

Even with these barriers, Somy highlighted what keeps the mission alive: the community behind it. She openly thanked supporters, saying that “the board, annual committee, donors, and volunteers—without them, none of this would be possible.”
Her organization, founded in 2007, has helped over 40,000 individuals—a milestone she connects directly to the transformative role NGOs play globally. In her words:
“Taking a victim and transforming them into a survivor… that’s our number one goal.”
A Reminder of Why World NGO Day Matters
Somy Ali’s voice adds to a growing global call: recognizing NGOs not just for their existence, but for the profound, often unseen impact they make every day. Her story illustrates the core purpose of World NGO Day—
to acknowledge, uplift, and empower organizations working tirelessly for human rights, equity, and dignity.
As more communities, leaders, and supporters engage with World NGO Day, stories like hers help reinforce a simple truth: NGOs thrive when society stands with them.
