Latvia Marks World NGO Day with Official Recognition

On February 27, 2025, Latvia formally recognized World Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Day, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s engagement with civil society. The Saeima, Latvia’s parliament, adopted amendments to the Law on Public Holidays, Commemoration Days and Celebration Days, officially including the observance in its national calendar. The initiative was spearheaded by the Saeima Presidium, signaling a growing institutional acknowledgment of NGOs’ societal contributions.

Leila Rasima, Chair of the Human Rights Committee, highlighted the symbolic importance of the recognition, emphasizing the day’s potential to strengthen collaboration between state institutions and non-governmental actors. The Presidium noted that the official observance would encourage discussions on social, environmental, and economic challenges, fostering solutions through structured dialogue with civil society.

World NGO Day itself originated in Latvia in 2009, introduced by Mārcis Liors Skadmanis and the Civic Alliance – Latvia. Its international footprint expanded in 2010 at the Baltic Sea NGO Forum in Vilnius, Lithuania, where twelve countries formally endorsed the observance. The first official opening event occurred in Helsinki in 2014, organized by Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

By institutionalizing World NGO Day, Latvia underscores the importance of NGOs in legislative review and policy input. The move illustrates a commitment to integrating civil society perspectives into national governance while providing a dedicated platform to highlight NGO achievements. For policymakers, activists, and citizens alike, February 27 now serves as a formal reminder of the pivotal role non-governmental organizations play in shaping social progress.
