CEPS Marks World NGO Day with Special Recognition in Seychelles

The Citizens Engagement Platform Seychelles (CEPS) marked World NGO Day on February 27, 2024, by hosting a ceremony to recognize individuals whose contributions to civil society have significantly impacted communities across the nation. Held at the National Theatre in Mont Fleuri, the event highlighted the work of NGOs in promoting social, environmental, and humanitarian initiatives.

CEPS Chief Executive Alvin Laurence underscored the importance of acknowledging efforts that often go unnoticed, announcing the appointment of four new commissioners for key thematic areas: Socio-Cultural, Health, Economic and Environment, and Faith-Based Commissions. Laurence emphasized that NGOs operate year-round, with their work touching broad segments of society and engaging youth in community projects.

The ceremony featured honorees including Noella Gonthier, Mia Dunford, Surya Khanna, and Dr. Marie-Thérèse Purvis, among others. Dr. Purvis, a long-time environmental advocate, highlighted her involvement in air quality and waste management initiatives, while emphasizing youth engagement in civil society.

Françoise Larue, CEPS Chairperson, noted that despite post-pandemic challenges, NGOs have adapted and expanded their reach, with new movements emerging and greater citizen participation. The event showcased how collaboration between civil society, government, and citizens strengthens resilience and fosters sustainable development.

World NGO Day, celebrated internationally since 2014, serves as a platform to recognize the role of NGOs in addressing societal challenges and encouraging civic engagement. In Seychelles, CEPS’ recognition underscored the strategic value of NGOs as partners in nation-building and community development.
