St. Maarten celebrated World NGO Day 2021 with a virtual conference, “Virtual NPOwer NGO World Day – SXM,” highlighting the pivotal role of non-governmental organizations in supporting the island’s social and economic development. Prime Minister Silveria E. Jacobs emphasized the contributions of local NGOs, noting their selfless work in promoting human rights, community welfare, and public policy advocacy.

World NGO Day, established by UK-based social entrepreneur Marcis Liors Skadmanis and recognized by the United Nations and European Union since 2014, honors the efforts of civil society in addressing societal gaps often left by government and private sectors. In St. Maarten, the COVID-19 pandemic illustrated the critical role NGOs play in cushioning income losses and providing targeted community support, complementing government programs.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance of continued partnerships between government and NGOs, highlighting that collaborative policies can enhance the efficiency and reach of civil society initiatives. She called on citizens and the business community to engage with NGOs, both through volunteerism and corporate social responsibility, to strengthen societal resilience and inclusivity.

By formally acknowledging NGOs during World NGO Day, St. Maarten reinforced the value of civil society in addressing social challenges and building stronger communities. The event served as both recognition and a call to action for sustained engagement, demonstrating how NGOs operate as essential partners in public welfare and development.

Source: St. Martin News Network – Prime Minister of St. Maarten, Silveria E.
