In the municipality of Puñal, Dominican Republic, civic and governmental leaders marked World NGO Day on February 27 with a formal acknowledgment of the role non‑governmental organizations play within local society. The day, commemorating the work of NGOs-nonprofit groups oriented toward humanitarian aid, human rights, and community development-served as a platform for municipal authorities to elevate public awareness about civic engagement outside formal government channels. 

 

Mayor Dr. Enrique Romero, speaking on behalf of the Puñal municipal government, framed NGOs as vital contributors to social welfare and community resilience. He highlighted the day’s origins-inspired by a proposal from Marcis Liors Skadmanis, a student of international law-which has grown since its formal establishment in 2010 to become a recognized occasion across many nations. 

 

In Puñal, the statement underscored the manifold ways in which NGOs supplement public services and fill gaps in support for vulnerable populations. While the municipal announcement did not detail specific collaborations, it positioned NGOs as partners in promoting human rights, environmental stewardship, and freedom of expression-issues central to both community cohesion and broader democratic practice.
