Namibian civil society marked World NGO Day with a nationwide event emphasizing the critical role of non-governmental organizations in advancing the country’s development goals. The 2023 celebration, held under the theme “Celebrating and Collaborating in Accelerating the Achievement of the National Development Goals of Namibia,” brought together NGOs, government representatives, and civic leaders to examine collaborative strategies for social impact.

Ronny Dempers, Executive Director of the Namibia Development Trust, highlighted how the day serves as recognition for the sacrifices and dedication of NGOs in improving lives. He pointed to successful joint initiatives with the National Planning Commission, including the review of the Government Civic Organisation Partnership Policy and the establishment of a network to enhance coordination among civil society organizations. These mechanisms aim to strengthen NGOs’ collective voice in shaping development policies and fostering community resilience.

Speakers also focused on sector-specific contributions. Ben Schernick, Director of the Nutrition and Food Security Alliance of Namibia, stressed the ongoing challenge of food insecurity and the critical role NGOs play in ensuring access to nutrition and health resources. Matheus Hashoongo, Chairperson of the National Federation of People with Disabilities, emphasized advocacy for vulnerable populations and the continued need for representation in policymaking spaces.

The celebration concluded with workshops on formalizing government–NGO engagement frameworks and the creation of a Namibian NSA network. By publicly acknowledging civil society contributions, Namibia reinforced the strategic importance of NGOs in addressing societal challenges, strengthening civic participation, and advancing sustainable development outcomes.

Source: New Era – Namibia celebrates World NGO Day
