Global Affairs Canada marked World NGO Day 2023 by recognizing the critical role of non-governmental organizations in humanitarian and international development efforts. Minister of International Development Harjit S. Sajjan emphasized the dedication of NGO workers who operate on the frontlines of crises, often at personal risk, to assist vulnerable and marginalized populations.

 

The statement highlighted Canada’s response to the 2023 earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria, where $50 million in flexible funding was allocated to support NGOs in delivering food, water, protection, and medical care. Local NGOs, despite facing direct impacts themselves, were noted as the first responders, demonstrating the agility and commitment required in disaster situations.

 

During a visit to the Indo-Pacific region, Minister Sajjan observed NGO efforts addressing the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis in Bangladesh. Organizations there are not only providing immediate relief but also promoting long-term development initiatives such as food security, employment generation, biodiversity protection, and healthcare improvements. These efforts align with broader Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to improve living conditions for millions while prioritizing the voices of women and girls in affected communities.

 

The Minister’s statement underscored the strategic importance of NGO partnerships in delivering timely, effective humanitarian assistance and fostering sustainable development outcomes. World NGO Day serves as an occasion to recognize these contributions and reaffirm governmental support for NGOs operating in complex, high-risk environments.
